GNS3

  • Routing emulator
    • Runs the actual IOS
  • Not good with switching

Packet Tracer

  • Full featured support for switching
  • Is a simulator not running real IOS software.
    • Does not run the full set of commands

8. GNS3 Installation and Configuration

GNS3 Download

Notes for install:

  • Uncheck WireShark.
    • Something with the installer causes that to fail.
    • Leave the rest
  • The software takes several minutes to install.
  • SolarWinds standard tool kit is not required, so OK to not install.

At Software startup

  • ( * ) Run only legacy IOS on my computer
  • Local server configuration
    • Change the Host Binding to 127.0.0.1 [ Next ]
  • Connection to local server was successful [ Next ]
  • [Finish]

Add an appliance

  • Download the IOS image
  • Download the GNS3 IOS Image
  • Return to GNS3
    • New Appliance Template
      • ( * ) Add an IOS router using a real IOS image (supported by Dynamips)
      • [ OK ]
    • IOS image
      • Browse to your c7200 file and select.
      • ‘Would you like to decompress this image?’ – [ Yes ]
      • [ Next ]
    • Name and Platform
      • Keep defaults
      • [ Next ]
    • Memory
      • Accept default (512)
      • [ Next ]
    • Network Adaptors
      • Slot 0: C7200-IO-FE (Default)
      • Slots 1, 2 and 3: PA- FE-TX
      • [ Next ]
    • Idle PC
      • Click the [Idle PC Finder] button for Idle PC next to the green bar
        • The system will run a few tests.  This takes about a minute or so.
        • Clcik [OK] when it finds a suitable value
      • [ Finish ]
  • Now we need to install the C3745
  • Preferences > IOS routers: IOS router templates > [ New ]
    • IOS Image
      • ( * ) New Image
      • Browse for the c3745 image and repeat the steps above for the c7200
        • For Interface slots 1, 2 and 3 select the NM-1FE-TX
    • WIC Modules
      • leave defaults (blanks)
      • [ Next ]
    • Idle PC finder – Yes!
    • Return to the IOS router templates screen and click [ OK ]

Starting a project

  • When prompted to start a new project, do not.  Close the program.  When needed, you’ll double click the project file ‘.gsn3project’ and the software will open with the project loaded for you.

9. Installation and setup for Cisco PacketTracer

  • Download from http://www.netacad.com/campaign/ptdt-4/
    • You’ll need to enroll with your name and email address.
      • and a lot of other info 🙁
    • Close the Start Class popup if prompted
    • Check your email and confirm your email address
    • Resources > Download PacketTracer
    • Extract the zip file and double click the .exe setup program
      • Accept any defaults
      • Installation takes < 1 minute
      • You may need to restart your computer to contine
    • At first run, you may need to log in with your email address and password used to enrole in the netacad program.

Then go to https://www.netacad.com, click on ‘Resources’ near the top-right corner then ‘Download Packet Tracer’
