{"id":3457,"date":"2021-06-05T21:34:12","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T21:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiki.thomasandsofia.com\/?p=3457"},"modified":"2021-06-07T11:48:44","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T11:48:44","slug":"dashboards-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wiki.thomasandsofia.com\/?p=3457","title":{"rendered":"Dashboards 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.panoply.io\/dashboard-101-basics-of-a-great-dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/blog.panoply.io\/dashboard-101-basics-of-a-great-dashboard<\/a><\/p>\n<h1>What is a Dashboard<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">A dashboard is a type of graphical user interface which often provides at-a-glance views of <strong>key performance indicators<\/strong> relevant to a particular objective or business process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Dashboards should be used as a medium to tell a story.\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">Messages delivered as stories are 22x more memorable than just facts<em>.<\/em> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">Data storytelling is taking a pile of numbers and turning them into a language and a compelling message that everyone can understand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Think of this as providing a guided tour through the data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Start with a vision<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a dashboard that provides busy execs something they can understand at a glance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Outline the story<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>What questions do I need answered?<\/li>\n<li>What metrics are required to answer these questions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Perform my analysis<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Often while trying to figure out a problem, new problems may arise that need answers before you&#8217;re able to answer the original question.<\/li>\n<li>Finding needles in the haystack often helps tell the story.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Final Design<\/h2>\n<h3>Know my audience<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with most important data, aka, sharpest needles, first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Choose the right chart for the data being represented<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is <span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">recommend to ultimately choose charts that most people are familiar with and understand how to read.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Add helpful text<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">At a minimum, a chart should have a title that includes details about the measures and categories being displayed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">Consider adding legends or values as labels. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"hs_cos_wrapper_post_body\" class=\"hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_rich_text\" data-hs-cos-general-type=\"meta_field\" data-hs-cos-type=\"rich_text\">Keep text near the lines in a line chart (or near the bar in a bar chart) helps the viewer to more easily make the connection between the two.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Use color effectively<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Guide the audience to the point you&#8217;re trying to make.<\/li>\n<li>Use bolder colors for more informative data.\n<ul>\n<li>Current month&#8217;s sales<\/li>\n<li>Most important information \/ greatest impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use muted or grayed colors for less important data\n<ul>\n<li>Previous months&#8217;
