class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8693=\"8693\"> Why are we having this problem again? <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8695=\"8695\"> Didn&#8217;t Mike and his team do this project <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8697=\"8697\"> a few months back? <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8699=\"8699\"> All too often, problems that were &#8220;solved&#8221; <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line transcripts-component__line--active t-black\" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8701=\"8701\"> were not really solved because the true root causes <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8703=\"8703\"> were not properly diagnosed and addressed. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8705=\"8705\"> That&#8217;s why analysis has to be done correctly. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8707=\"8707\"> So, let&#8217;s discuss the Analyze Phase <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8709=\"8709\"> and the steps involved. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8711=\"8711\"> The Analyze Phase is the third phase <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8713=\"8713\"> of a Six Sigma project. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8715=\"8715\"> It is the A in DMAIC. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8717=\"8717\"> The purpose of this phase is to answer the W word, Why. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8719=\"8719\"> Why is there a problem? <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8721=\"8721\"> We have to determine which Xs are the key factors <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8723=\"8723\"> that impact the problem Y <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8725=\"8725\"> in the equation Y = f(x). <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8727=\"8727\"> There are five steps in the Analyze Phase. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8729=\"8729\"> Generate a list of potential Xs that impact Y. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8731=\"8731\"> Organize the potential Xs. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8733=\"8733\"> Shortlist and select the likely key Xs. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8735=\"8735\"> Develop a data collection plan for the analysis. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8737=\"8737\"> And, prove the key Xs in Y = f(X). <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8741=\"8741\"> generating a list of potential Xs that impact Y. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8743=\"8743\"> This is done using brainstorming <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8745=\"8745\"> to generate a list of potential suspects. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8747=\"8747\"> In our example of the pizza chain <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8749=\"8749\"> with complaints on pizza crust, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8751=\"8751\"> what impacts crust? <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8753=\"8753\"> Possible Xs include the flour, the chefs, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8755=\"8755\"> procedures, tossing technique, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8757=\"8757\"> oven temperature, baking time, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8759=\"8759\"> delivery time, and the list goes on. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8761=\"8761\"> List as many potential Xs as possible. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8763=\"8763\"> Next, we need to organize the potential Xs. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8765=\"8765\"> To do this, organize the brainstorm list <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8767=\"8767\"> using a tool such as a cause-effect diagram <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8769=\"8769\"> or fishbone diagram. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8771=\"8771\"> After the diagram has been completed, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8773=\"8773\"> shortlist and select the most likely key Xs <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8775=\"8775\"> that are impactful. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8777=\"8777\"> Use the knowledge, experience, and expertise <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8779=\"8779\"> of those familiar with the problem <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8781=\"8781\"> to identify which potential Xs <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8783=\"8783\"> are the most likely culprits or key X factors. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8785=\"8785\"> Then develop a data collection plan for the analysis. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8787=\"8787\"> We need a data collection plan <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8789=\"8789\"> before collecting any data. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8791=\"8791\"> Why? <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8793=\"8793\"> So that the correct and sufficient amount of data <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8799=\"8799\"> that if you suspect oven temperature is a culprit, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8801=\"8801\"> you may need to run a regression. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8803=\"8803\"> If you&#8217;re not sure what regression is, <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8815=\"8815\"> Therefore, you should plan to collect sufficient data <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8817=\"8817\"> on oven temperature and how well done let&#8217;s say there are three key X factors. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8835=\"8835\"> Tossing technique, oven temperature, and baking time <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8837=\"8837\"> were proven to cause variation <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8839=\"8839\"> and problems with our pizza crust. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8841=\"8841\"> In summary, the focus of the Analyze Phase <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-8843=\"8843\"> is on the question Why. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-9110=\"9110\"> &#8211; People are late for work. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-9112=\"9112\"> Why are they late for work? <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-9148=\"9148\"> A Cause-Effect diagram is simply a diagram <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-9150=\"9150\"> to organize the list of potential causes <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-9152=\"9152\"> on a particular effect. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-9154=\"9154\"> In the above example, late for work is the effect. <\/span> <span have seen this in your own processes. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10082=\"10082\"> Say we have a 100-step process, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10084=\"10084\"> and there is an inspection step that takes place in step 99, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10086=\"10086\"> and if it fails that inspection, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10088=\"10088\"> the product has to go all the way back <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10090=\"10090\"> to step two to be redone. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10092=\"10092\"> That&#8217;s a rework loop that is 98 steps long. <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-control-name=\"transcripts_seek_in_video\" data-ember-action=\"\" data-ember-action-10098=\"10098\"> or better yet, implement self-checking, <\/span> <span class=\"transcripts-component__line \"
